One of the leading pediatrics / children's hospitals is currently looking for a genetic counselor at the UAE location.

The Genetic Counselor will provide specialized counseling education and support to patients and families navigating genetic diagnoses and testing. Collaborating with clinical teams and genomic laboratories, the role ensures accurate test selection, results communication, and patient-centered care.

The Genetic Counselor also develops educational programs and materials, mentors team members, and contributes to research and quality improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Practice

  • Provide genetic counseling to patients and families regarding diagnoses and testing.
  • Interpret family history, clinical, and genetic findings to assess patient risks.
  • Educate patients and families, tailoring plans to their unique needs.
  • Coordinate specialty clinics schedules and appointments.
  • Serve as a liaison between the clinical team and genomics laboratories, ensuring appropriate tests are ordered and results are communicated efficiently.
  • Generate patient reports from genomic data.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new staff and genetic counselors.
  • Benchmark care against evidence-based practices and hospital standards.

2. Professional Development

  • Identify and pursue self-learning opportunities.
  • Mentor staff and students through orientation, preceptorship, and competency-building programs.
  • Maintain a professional portfolio and participate in performance improvement initiatives, research, and clinical audits.

3. Communication

  • Foster respectful, effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Document relevant patient information accurately and promptly.
  • Advocate for a safe environment by proactively addressing and reporting safety risks.

4. Collaboration

  • Advocate for and involve patients and families in care decisions.
  • Coordinate care to optimize patient outcomes, reduce length of stay, and enhance satisfaction.
  • Promote interdisciplinary teamwork to achieve clinical quality goals.

5. Safety

  • Uphold child safeguarding principles and contribute to the development of safety strategies.
  • Report unsafe practices and proactively address risks.
  • Ensure clarity and accuracy in decision-making and documentation.

Requirements

Education

Essential:

Postgraduate qualification in Genetic Counseling.

  • Board Eligible or Board Certified by a recognized institution such as:
    • The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)
    • The American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG)

Preferred:

  • Board Certified by a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in genetic counseling.

Experience

  • At least 2 years of clinical experience in a pediatric hospital, specifically managing complex care patients.

Job Specific Skills and Abilities

  • Positive, enthusiastic, and self-motivated.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Team-oriented with the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records is an advantage.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Fluency in English (speaking and writing) is required.
  • Arabic language skills (spoken) are an asset.
  • International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.0 or equivalent (valid within the past two years).
