Cabinet Maker Responsibilities:

  • Selecting the appropriate materials,fittings, and tools for each task.
  • Cuttingresources down to size as needed.
  • Planning aneffective approach to work to ensure that each project is completedon time.
  • Creating standard and customcomponents of cabinets.
  • Gathering the elementsof each cabinet and assembling the finalproduct.
  • Applying sealant, varnish, and paintto cabinets if required.
  • Inspecting eachcompleted item to ensure accurate construction and necessaryfinishes.
  • Repairing elements of cabinets thathave been sent in for servicing.
  • Wearing therequisite uniform and taking necessary precautions to remainsafe.
  • Advising on appropriate care for finishedproducts upon request.

Cabinet MakerRequirements:

  • High schooldiploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Completion of atraining program or apprenticeship will beadvantageous.
  • Prior experience as a CabinetMaker, with a portfolio of completed works.
  • Theability to visualize spaces to create appropriatefurniture.
  • Good arithmeticskills.
  • Excellent teamwork and customer serviceskills.
  • Attention todetail.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines withoutsacrificing workmanship.

Skills

AutoCAD: AutoCAD is a computer-aided design (CAD) software used forcreating precise 2D and 3D drawings, including detailed cabinetrydesigns, layouts, and material specifications. Cabinet makers useAutoCAD to visualize their designs, efficiently utilize materials,and ensure accurate dimensions 1 .

  • SketchUp : SketchUp is a 3D modelingsoftware that allows cabinet makers to create, visualize, andmodify custom cabinet designs. It enhances creativity, accuratedimensioning, and efficient material planning 1.
  • CNC Operation : Familiarity with operatingcomputer numerical control (CNC) machines for precise cutting,shaping, and carving of cabinetcomponents.
  • Joinery Techniques : Knowledge ofvarious joinery methods (e.g., dovetail joints, mortise and tenon)used to assemble cabinets.
  • Wood Finishing :Understanding different wood finishes (stains, varnishes, paints)and their application to achieve desired aesthetics andprotection.
  • Laminate Application : Ability toapply laminate (e.g., Formica) to cabinetsurfaces.
  • Veneering : Knowledge of veneerapplication techniques for decorativesurfaces.
  • Cabinet Vision : Familiarity withspecialized software like Cabinet Vision for designing andvisualizing cabinetry projects.
  • SafetyCompliance : Adherence to safety protocols when using tools andmachinery in the workshop.
  • Blueprint Reading :Ability to interpret architectural and technicaldrawings.
  • Festool Systems : Familiarity withFestool power tools and systems commonly used inwoodworking.
  • Edge Banding : Understanding howto apply edge banding to cabinet edges for a cleanfinish.

In addition totechnical skills, an entry-level Cabinet Maker should possess thefollowing qualities:
