RoleDescription

An occupational therapist is a healthprofessional who is responsible for helping patients regain theirability to perform daily living and work activities. Their patientshave generally lost these abilities because of mental, physical,developmental, or emotional conditions.

This is one member of a rehabilitation teamthat may also include a physical therapist, speech pathologist,psychologist, and social worker. Occupational therapists may workwith specific populations such as children or the elderly, or theymay work in specialized settings, including mental healthinstitutions and skilled nursing facilities

OccupationalTherapistResponsibilities

  • Conduct patient assessments andevaluations to determine their physical condition, limitations,medical histories and personal goals
  • Communicate with physicians and other healthcare providers to confirm plans of care
  • Advise family members and other supportiveindividuals about the level of care the patientneeds
  • Provideoccupational therapy guidance, support and education during patientsessions
  • Teachpatients how to interact with adaptivetechnology
  • Showpatients how to use assistive devices
  • Assist patients with purchasing products tohelp them achieve their goals
  • Guide patients through gradedactivities
  • Generatereports for patients and their physicians andfamilies
  • Visitpatients’ homes to help install or use assistivedevices

OccupationalTherapistRequirements

  • Master’s Degree inOccupational Therapy required
  • 3+ years’ experience providingoccupational therapy to seniors
  • Current state OT licenserequired
  • Willingnessto participate in continued educationcourses
  • Compassionateand caring demeanor
