The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a wide range of heavy machinery and vehicles, ensuring operational efficiency and safety. This role requires expertise in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, particularly those found in diesel-powered equipment. Key Responsibilities Diagnosis and Troubleshooting: Inspect and test heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, bulldozers, loaders) to detect faults and malfunctions. Utilize diagnostic tools, computerized testing equipment, and technical manuals to determine the extent of repair required. Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic system issues. Repair and Maintenance: Perform complex repairs, including disassembling, repairing, and reassembling major components such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and braking systems. Adjust, repair, or replace defective parts, components, or systems using hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment. Fabricate, modify, or install replacement parts or special equipment as needed. Preventive Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance and safety inspections on equipment (e.g., oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, filter replacements) to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment life. Service and maintain working tools and attachments. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all repairs, maintenance activities, and parts inventory. Ensure all work is performed in compliance with company, safety, and regulatory standards. Teamwork and Support: Collaborate with other mechanics, operators, and supervisors to schedule and coordinate maintenance tasks. Provide on-site field service and emergency repairs as required (for Field Mechanic roles). Skills Completion of a vocational, technical, or apprenticeship program in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or a related field is often preferred. Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Heavy Duty Mechanic Certification, ASE Certifications) are a major asset. Experience: Proven experience (typically 3-5+ years) as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic working on diesel engines and heavy machinery. Technical Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, power trains, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and electrical circuits. Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics. Skilled in using a variety of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, hoists, and diagnostic software. Soft Skills: Excellent problem‑solving and troubleshooting skills. Strong attention to detail and ability to work without direct supervision.
